Portrait of Sharana Mahomed

Sharana Mahomed

Sharana Mahomed is a medical doctor, clinical microbiologist, researcher, author and filmmaker. She heads HIV Pathogenesis at CAPRISA and has published widely in high-impact scientific journals, and her experiences in South African medicine bring close observation of human lives to stories about identity, grief, belief and the uncomfortable truths that shape us.

A member of the Writers Guild of South Africa, she has written and directed short films and feature-length screenplays. Her debut novel, The Last Explanation, is a supernatural psychological thriller set in Durban, where a psychiatrist’s search for answers draws him into questions of memory, manipulation and the limits of what medicine can explain.

Medicine can't explain everything

The Last Explanation

In The Last Explanation, Sharana Mahomed draws on her experience in medicine and her fascination with human behaviour to explore what happens when the search for answers becomes deeply personal.

Set in Durban, the novel follows psychiatrist Dr Arun Nair as he assesses a man accused of murder — a man who knows things about Arun's past that he should have no way of knowing. As the evidence becomes harder to trust, Arun must confront his own need for certainty.

A supernatural psychological thriller about grief, memory and belief, The Last Explanation asks how far we will go to make sense of what we cannot explain.

The Yellow Kite

The Yellow Kite reflects a simple truth: children do not choose the worlds they are born into. Through the image of a kite, Sharana Mahomed explores childhood's fragile hopes amid war and displacement — the longing for safety, the freedom to play, and the right to imagine a future beyond conflict. It is a quiet reminder that every child deserves room to dream.
